S-Tetromino — The S-Shaped Piece

An S-shaped zigzag piece. Fits well on staircase-shaped surfaces.

The S-piece is a zigzag shape made of two offset pairs of cells. Dropped flat on a level surface, it tends to leave a gap underneath, so it's best laid on a staircase spot with a one-cell height difference.

S and Z pieces are mirror-image pairs — alternating them fills each other's contours and levels out the surface. Standing an S-piece upright against a staircase on the right wall is another common use.

It's considered one of the trickier pieces to handle, but reading the surface contour and preparing staircases lets you place S and Z pieces without leaving gaps.
