Soft Drop

Bring a piece down faster while still leaving room for last-second adjustments.

Soft drop lowers a piece faster than normal by holding the down arrow. Unlike a hard drop, it doesn't lock immediately, so you can still fine-tune position with left/right movement and rotation while it descends.

Controlling the speed with soft drop enables precise placement when wedging a piece into a narrow gap or rotating it under an overhang.

During lock delay — the brief grace period after touching down before a piece locks — you can still move and rotate for final adjustments. Combined with soft drop, this lets you fill even the trickiest spots accurately.
